The UNIDEE Academy is a unique academy, offering models and ideas to transform society and create a more sustainable world through art and design research.
We promote a multidisciplinary knowledge, oriented towards sustainability and common good, conscious innovation, the impact of technologies on mankind, on the environment and on society.
We stimulate you to “learn how to learn”, to assume collective responsibilities, working as part of a team, and individual responsibilities, loving the complexity.
We create new professional figures, able to interpret the present through the eyes of the future, and to transform society in a responsible and sustainable way.
Our courses feed on quality scientific research and on exchanges with institutions and companies which represent an actually emerging geography of change.
At the UNIDEE Academy, we love difference, we nurture dialogue, we welcome others’ opinions, we create always new syntheses.
Our founder is Michelangelo Pistoletto, one of the greatest contemporary artists. Our philosophy derives from his teachings, and is based on the concept of the Third Paradise.
The Third Paradise is the symbol of our Academy and is well known throughout the world. Over 150 institutions and ambassadors from all continents promote the inclusive vision of the Third Paradise through always different projects: the Third Paradise is a vision to build a sustainable future.
The UNIDEE Academy is the evolution of Cittadellarte’s programme, started in 1999 as an experience of residency for international artists, and in time developed into an educational model which has welcomed hundreds of people willing to experiment: just like you.
“What is the Third Paradise?
It is the fusion between the first and second paradise. The first is the paradise in which humans were fully integrated into nature. The second is the artificial paradise, developed by human intelligence to globalizing proportions through science and technology. This paradise is made of artificial needs, artificial products, artificial comforts, artificial pleasures, and every other form of artifice. Humankind has created a truly artificial world which has triggered, in an exponential manner and in parallel with beneficial effects, irreversible processes of decline and consumption of the natural world. The Third Paradise is the third phase of humanity, realized as a balanced connection between artifice and nature.
The Third Paradise is the passage to a new level of planetary civilization, essential to ensure the survival of the human race. To this purpose we first of all need to re-form the principles and the ethical behaviours guiding our common life.
The Third Paradise is the great myth that leads everyone to take personal responsibility in the global vision.
The term “paradise” comes from the Ancient Persian and means “protected garden”. We are the gardeners who must protect this planet and heal the human society inhabiting it.
The symbol of the Third Paradise, a reconfiguration of the mathematical infinity sign, is made of three consecutive circles. The two external circles represent all the diversities and antinomies, among which nature and artifice. The central one is given by the compenetration of the opposite circles and represents the generative womb of a new humanity.”
Michelangelo Pistoletto, 2003
At the UNIDEE Academy, Art permeates everything: it is the activity able to convey mankind through change, leading it to the Third Paradise.
We are in Biella, in an area at the foot of the Western Alps with a prestigious history of entrepreneurship and innovation linked to the production of wool and to nature.
The campus sits in a landscape of rare beauty, next to the fresh waters of the river Cervo, rich in woods and wildlife, but also precious relics of industrial archaeology, since it was the cradle of one of the first industrial hubs, even before the unification of Italy.
We have at our disposal big bright flexible spaces: school rooms, a project room, a 24 h studio, laboratories, a garden, a farmed garden, an auditorium, a library, a lecture hall, the Terme Culturali, a cafeteria, exhibition spaces, a performance room, a cinema room, a theatre.
All is ready to welcome you to a 360-degree full-time experience. You won’t come here only because it is a beautiful place, but also because the world goes through here. It is an international hub of higher education of excellency and of research on the most current topics of the contemporary world.
UNIDEE guarantees the quality of its educational method having based its activity on RESEARCH for more than 20 years, which has made it gain international recognition.
UNIDEE’s research acknowledges the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals as its guiding lines.
The UNIDEE Academy has started the process of accreditation to the Ministry of Education and Research for its first level three-year courses.
It also collaborates with accredited institutions that already provide Italian and foreign titles such as Milan’s Polytechnic, Bologna’s Academy of Fine Arts and the ArtEZ Hogeschool voor de kunsten in Arnhem (The Netherlands).
“UNIDEE is a vast container of thought, a laboratory placing art at the centre of an interactive research investigating the different sectors of common life. UNIDEE asks society to contribute with proposals suitable to designing new perspectives.
The different aspects of knowledge - be it humanistic, social or scientific – find in UNIDEE a context in which to be analysed in depth and connected among each other through the input of creative generators.
The basic objective is to react to the profound contradictions in the vertical acceleration of what we call progress, as opposed to the tragic progressive flattening of human dignity; contradictions making it difficult to define global contemporary society in terms of an advanced civilization. This when it would seem we should have reached a truly evolved era in the name of progress.”
(Michelangelo Pistoletto, 1999)
The UNIDEE Academy collaborates with some of the most important European universities and academies. Among our main partners:
In association with ELIA and WDO
The UNIDEE Academy doesn’t work alone. We have always been collaborating with businesses and organizations from all over the world: from artisan to small, medium, big, multinational companies, but also associations, local and global cultural institutions, organized groups.
Among our partners are the United Nations, the European Space Agency, FAO and FCA, Illycaffé, Ermenegildo Zegna, as well as Slow Food, Social Fare, San Patrignano and the Red Cross.
We want to develop ideas and people able to build a sustainable world through art and design. We can only do this thanks to this extraordinary network. The projects we share with each organization are different; the ways of collaborating are conceived together, creating synergies and a communion of intents on the possibilities to produce a common future.
Whether you hold a diploma or a degree, or you are a professional in search of a refresher course, that’s how we imagine you:
· you are “international”, happy to converse in English in addition to your mother tongue;
· you can read reality in depth and describe it in an original way;
· you are not satisfied with mainstream interpretations and you are prone to lateral thinking;
· you listen to other people’s reasons and you always question yourself;
· you are autonomous in your thinking;
· you feel a strong responsibility of action towards others;
· you transform theory into practice and you are aware of the effects of your actions;
· you create non-pre-existing solutions through synthesis;
· you like working as part of a team;
· you interpret the future already present in your time;
· you are smiling.
The UNIDEE Academy will change your life.
The intensive experience, the international approach, living in contact with the most innovative researches on sustainability, the projects all over the world, the passionate faculty, art and the project will turn you into an actor of change.
You won’t be an ordinary professional figure. We will train you to be a strategist in the transformation of society. You could become a designer of social innovation, a creative formed through society and working in society, a facilitator, a design-trained manager and at the same time a management-trained designer. A bit of an entrepreneur, a bit of a philosopher, a bit of an artist; a professional of the mind.
Who has studied with UNIDEE has the ability to find new ways to fulfill their potential on a daily basis, and to turn their creative, academic and professional aspirations into reality.

Research is at the heart of the courses and of everything taught at the UNIDEE Academy.
The whole UNIDEE educational approach is multidisciplinary and inclusive: we nurture critical thinking and difference.
The objective of everything learnt here is the fulfilment of sustainability through a responsible social transformation.
Each course consists of a wide set of knowledge and disciplines, coordinated by three different departments:
Art, Design and Human Sciences. We will teach you the disciplines of planning, design, materials. You will familiarize yourself with the fundamentals of a few humanistic disciplines (sociology, philosophy, psychology, anthropology, law) and the outcomes of their most advanced researches on social transformation.
Technology and Cultural Studies. You will learn the basics of sustainability and technology. Cultural studies linked to the relationship man-technology; media, communication sciences and techniques.
Economics and Entrepreneurship. You will acquire the basics of economic disciplines, finance, social impact, the skills of contemporary professions.
Any possible soft skill: relational, listening, time management, high-diversity group management, discernment of opportunities.
And always, anywhere, art will be in the air you breath.
The Professors are just like you.
Surely at school you had a favourite teacher. That’s going to be difficult at UNIDEE, because the whole teaching team will think like you, have your same vision of life.
You won’t find teachers’ desks, but common areas where professors, professionals, managers, entrepreneurs, artists and ambassadors of the Third Paradise philosophy will be talking to each other. And you can bet, you’ll often find yourself chatting with Michelangelo Pistoletto himself.
The complex social, environmental and economic challenges of the near future require the intervention of new professional figures able to re-direct organizations along the lines of responsibility and social relevance.
The executive master in Design, Creativity and Social Practices, born from a collaboration between Milan’s Polytechnic and the UNIDEE Academy, is dedicated to professionals intending to acquire the necessary skills to realize this transformation within their work places. An immersive experience supplying practical and teamwork skills, relying on the collaboration of Italian and international organizations operating in the field of social innovation and social engagement.
The programme declines social and environmental commitment into a professional figure that adds value to any organization. The proposed method integrates design skills with art’s ability to interpret and think social transformation, and it develops on propositions of critical thinking, on notions of economy and contemporary organization, and on models of inclusive communication.
The objective is to provide the necessary methods and instruments to respond to contemporary challenges through the use of strategies defining the whole design process, from identifying the issue to working out the solution. These skills will be accompanied by the technical-economic knowledge needed to evaluate possible social impacts and to manage future business projects.
For twenty years UNIDEE has been offering informal courses and intensive modules on transformation of society through art and design.
The programme of the next modules, curated by Valerio del Baglivo, focuses on three main issues:
1. COLLECTIVE AGENCY
2. CLIMATE ACTION
3. MODES OF INSTITUTING
Please see the full programme of modules and mentors and info on how to apply to participate at www.cittadellarte.it/unidee
UNIDEE Academy’s methodology of artistic research is based on the model of scientific research. Each research is public, traceable, available for consultation and decodifiable within the international semantic context.
UNIDEE Academy’s research turns specific with the “Theorem of Trinamics”, the inspiring principle deriving from the philosophy of the Third Paradise and accompanying the most advanced experiences in international scientific research, using art as a catalyst of new knowledge.
In Trinamics, the dynamics of the number three, evolution occurs through a continuous search for new syntheses between theses and antitheses. It’s a research critiquing itself, questioning its own results to develop new further syntheses.
UNIDEE Academy’s research aims at producing new knowledge through a transdisciplinary critical discourse on the progress of science and technology to apply to a responsible social transformation. It tries to reflect on the social, technological and spiritual aspirations of an emerging global society, at the same time maintaining a critical awareness of the backward forces and fields inhibiting a social and cultural development.
The research network is strategically positioned all over the planet, respecting distinctive cultural models. We are looking for results involving new languages, systems, structures and behaviours, intuitions on the nature of the mind, of matter and of human identity, with a particular attention to social impact.
The UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals are the reference points for UNIDEE Academy’s research:
• No Poverty • Zero Hunger • Good Health and Well-being • Quality Education • Gender Equality • Clean Water and Sanitation • Affordable and Clean Energy • Decent Work and Economic Growth • Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure • Reduced Inequality • Sustainable Cities and Communities • Responsible Consumption and Production • Climate Action • Life Below Water • Life on Land • Peace and Justice Strong Institutions • Partnerships to achieve the Goal.
